A Christian Parent Teaching Guide Based on Scripture
The best way to teach your children to pray is to pray with them, and
let them hear you pray. But children need to learn more than just how
to talk to God. They also need to learn why we pray, how prayer works,
and how they can have a relationship with God through prayer.
You can help your children learn about prayer and take their own first
steps towards a relationship with God by looking to the Scriptures.
Throughout the New Testament, you can find a number of things for which
a child can pray.
In Colossians 1:1-14, the Apostle Paul gives us nine points we can use
to pray for those within the body of Christ. You can use this text when
you pray for others, and to help your children to develop a habit of
prayer.
By using Colossians 1:1-14 as a parent teaching guide, your children can learn to pray for themselves and others to:
1. Understand God's will
2. Gain spiritual wisdom
3. Please and honor God
4. Bear good fruit
5. Grow in knowledge of God
6. Be filled with God's strength
7. Receive endurance and patience
8. Stay full of Christ's joy
9. Give thanks always
When you're ready to begin teaching your children about prayer, one
activity you can do with them is to have them copy the above outline of
Colossions 1:1-14 onto a sticky note, index card, or construction
paper.
Younger children can copy the passage onto a piece of colorful
construction paper and decorate it with drawings or stickers. If your
children aren't able to print on their own yet, you can write it for
them. Older children might prefer to use a sticky note or an index
card. They could use fancy pens and show off their cursive writing
skills instead of printing the passage.
Help your child choose a special place to keep their paper - perhaps on
your refrigerator, your child's bedroom wall, the bathroom mirror, or
in the vehicle - as a reminder of how to pray for both believers and
those who are outside the body of Christ.
If you decide to keep it in your vehicle, refer to the passage while
you're driving and pray with your children for those around you in
traffic. If you place it on your child's bedroom wall or mirror,
encourage them to pray while they are getting ready for the day, for
the people they will meet that day. If the passage is on your fridge,
you can pray together with your children at breakfast or dinnertime.
You can also help them memorize the passage by reading it to them, or
with them, five days in a row, and then as often as needed to keep it
fresh in their minds. Pray together after each reading.
Memorizing and using this passage daily will help your children make
these nine points a regular part of their prayer time with God.
May God bless you as you diligently teach His Word,
