Celebrating the Reformation with Family and Friends ~
Compiled by Pam Forster
Take your Halloween alternative or Fall Festival to a new level and teach the history of the Protestant Reformation in a memorable way ~ have a Reformation party!
When we say, "October 31st", immediately we think halloween festivities and hidious costumes.
Yet, this is the day, in 1517, that Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses on the door of the church in Wittenburg. This was a turning point in Christian history, but how many of us know the date in relation to Martin Luther's brave stand, let alone celebrate it? A Night of Reformation can change all that.
During the Protestant Reformation the great grace of God brought together circumstances and obedient men, and used them to turn the course of history. To understand this period of time, and to learn from its courageous men, here's a study that will expose your family or church group to learn more about some of the great heroes of the Christian faith.
The character and size of your group, the goals you have, your budget, and the willingness of helpers will all contribute to the type of party you choose to have. In Pam Forster's book, "A Night of Reformation" you'll find ideas and suggestions for: refreshments and meal plans, costumes, a talent show, period background music, Reformation hymns and psalms, decorations, contests, student displays of Reformation art and writing projects, books and magazines that families can read in preparation.
This resource is full of ideas for members of church congregations, children’s clubs, and homeschool support groups who are looking for a Christian alternative to Halloween. An individual family could also glean ideas to use for a unit study on the Reformation, consummating with a family party. Plus a family could serve neighbors and gain evangelistic opportunities by providing a fun and wholesome activity for neighborhood gatherings.
