Felt Story Teacher’s Script:

Setting of Bible Account: In the town of Nazareth in Galilee. Possibly in B.C. 5

Matthew gives us some information about Mary’s betrothment. To be betrothed means a man and a woman made a verbal commitment to be married. It usually was a period of 10 to 12 months before their wedding. Can you tell me who Mary was betrothed to? Yes, his name was Joseph.

18 Now after Mary (Place felt #102 – Young woman facing right) was betrothed to Joseph, (Place felt figure #56 – Young man facing left, on flannel board) before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. (Remove felt figure #102)

20 But while he thought about these things, (Remove felt figure #56 and place felt object #323 - Bed and figure #118-Sleeping young man) behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, (Place felt figure #9B – Angel facing right) saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins." So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: "Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel," which is translated, "God with us."

24 Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, (Remove felt object #323 - Bed and felt figure #118 – Sleeping young man, replace with felt #56 – Young man facing left) did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife Mary (Add felt figure #102 – Young woman facing right).
